My young staffers were talented, honest, and... 9th September 2010, 00:40
My young staffers were talented, honest, and dedicated, and I felt I owed many of them the chance to serve the country by working in the White HouseIn time, they would get their sea legs and do very wellBut in the critical early months, both the staff and I would do a lot of on-the-job learning, and some of the lessons would prove to be quite costly

We also didnt give messaging anything close to the amount of attention that we had in the election, though its harder in government, even for the President, to get out the message you want every dayAs I said, everything happens at once, and any controversy is more likely to dominate the news than a policy decision, no matter how important the decision might beThats what happened with the Zo Baird and gays-in-the-military controversiesThough they took up only a small part of my time, people watching the evening news could be forgiven for thinking I spent my time on nothing elseIf we had thought more about this challenge and worked harder on it during the transition, Im sure we would have handled it better

Despite the problems, I believed our transition had gone reasonably wellSo, apparently, did the American peopleBefore I left for Washington, an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll gave me a 60 percent favorability rating, up from just 32 percent in MayHillary was doing even better; 66 percent saw her as a positive role model for American women, up from 39 percent in the earlier surveyAnother poll taken by a bipartisan organization said gucci paolo watches that 84 percent of the people approved of my performance since the electionPresident Bushs job approval was up, too, nearly twenty points, to 59 percentOur fellow citizens had regained their optimism about America, and they were giving me a chance to succeed

On January 16, when Hillary, Chelsea, and I said good-bye to the friends who came to the Little Rock airport to see us off, I thought of Abraham Lincolns moving farewell remarks to the people of Springfield, Illinois, as he left the train station on his journey to the White House: My friendsNo one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this partingTo this place, and the kindness of these people, I owe everythingTrusting in [God], who can go with me, and remain with you and be everywhere for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be wellI didnt say it as well as Lincoln, but I did my best to convey that message to my fellow ArkansansWithout them, I wouldnt have been getting on that airplane

We were flying to Virginia, where we would begin the inaugural events at Monticello, Thomas Jeffersons homeOn the flight, I thought about the historical significance of my election and the momentous challenges aheadThe election represented a generational shift in America, from the World War II veterans to the baby boomers, who were alternately derided as spoiled and self-absorbed, and lauded as idealistic and committed to the common goodWhether liberal or conservative, our politics were forged by Vietnam, mulberry vintage civil rights, and the tumult of 1968, with its protests, riots, and assassinationsWe were also the first generation to feel the full force of the womens movement, the impact of which people were about to observe in the White HouseHillary would be the most professionally accomplished First Lady in historyNow that she had resigned from her law practice and her boards, my income would be the sole support of our family for the first time since we married, and she would be free to use her enormous talent as a full-time partner in our workI thought she could have a more positive impact than any First Lady since Eleanor RooseveltOf course, such activism would make her more controversial with those who thought First Ladies should stay above the fray, or who disagreed with us politically, but that, too, was part of what our generational change meant

Clearly, we represented a changing of the guard, but could we meet the tests of these tumultuous times? Could we restore the economy, social progress, and the legitimacy of government? Could we blunt the rise of religious, racial, and ethnic strife across the globe? In the words of the Time magazine citation in its Man of the Year edition, could we lead Americans to dig out of their deepest problems by reimagining themselves? Despite our victory in the Cold War and the rise of democracy around the world, powerful forces were dividing people and tearing at the fragile fabric of communities, both at home and abroadIn the face of these challenges, the balenciaga giant bag American people had taken a chance on me

About three weeks after the election, I had received a remarkable letter from Robert McNamara, who, as secretary of defense under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, had prosecuted the Vietnam WarHe had been moved to write me by a news story he read about my friendship with my Oxford roommate Frank Aller, who had resisted the draft and had killed himself in 1971This is what he said:

For meand I believe for the nation as wellthe Vietnam war finally ended the day you were elected presidentBy their votes, the American people, at long last, recognized that the Allers and the Clintons, when they questioned the wisdom and morality of their governments decisions relating to Vietnam, were no less patriotic than those who served in uniformThe anguish with which you and your friends debated our actions in 1969 was painful for you then and, I am sure, the resurrection of the issues during the campaign reopened old woundsBut the dignity with which you met the attacks, and your refusal to draw back from the belief that it is the responsibility of all citizens to question the basis for any decision to send our youth to war, has strengthened the nation for all time

I was moved by McNamaras letter, and by similar ones I received from Vietnam veteransJust before the election, Bob Higgins, an ex-marine from Hillsboro, Ohio, sent me his Vietnam service medal because of my stand against the war and the way you have conducted yourself in the bitter campaignA few saddle handbags months earlier, Ronald Murphy of Las Vegas had given me his Purple Heart, and Charles Hampton from Marmaduke, Arkansas, had sent me the Bronze Star he earned for valor in VietnamAll told, in 1992, Vietnam veterans sent me five Purple Hearts, three Vietnam service medals, a combat infantry badge, and my fellow Arkansans Bronze StarI framed most of them and hung them in my private hall off the Oval Office

As my plane headed down into the beautiful Virginia landscape, which gave birth to four of our first five Presidents, I was thinking of those veterans and their medals, hoping that at last we could heal the wounds of the 1960s, and praying that I would prove worthy of their sacrifices, their support, and their dreams

O n Sunday, January 17, Al and Tipper Gore, Hillary, and I began inaugural week with a tour of Monticello, followed by a discussion of Thomas Jeffersons importance to America with young people

After the event, we boarded our bus for the 120-mile trip to WashingtonThe bus symbolized our commitment to giving the federal government back to the peopleBesides, we cherished the fond memories it held, and we wanted one last rideWe stopped for a brief church service in the pretty Shenandoah Valley town of Culpeper, then made our way to WashingtonJust as in the campaign, there were well-wishers, and a few critics, along the way

By the time we got to the capital, the public events of our inaugural, entitled An American Reunion: New Beginnings, Renewed Hope, were already gucci horsebit hobo under

I only wish we may all keep well and be together,... 7th September 2010, 00:27
I only wish we may all keep well and be together, nothing else
"I have ever so many wishes, but the pet one is to be an artist, and go to Rome, and do fine pictures, and be the best artist in the whole world," was Amy's modest desire
"We're an ambitious set, aren't we? Every one of us, but Beth, wants to be rich and famous, and gorgeous in every respectI do wonder if any of us will ever get our wishes," said Laurie, chewing grass like a meditative calf
"I've got the key to my castle in the air, but whether I can unlock the door remains to be seen," observed Jo mysteriously
"I've got the key to mine, but I'm not allowed to try itHang college!" muttered Laurie with an impatient sigh
"Here's mine!" and Amy waved her pencil
"I haven't got any," said Meg forlornly
"Yes, you have," said Laurie at once
"Where?"
"In your face
"Nonsense, that's of no use
"Wait and see if it doesn't bring you something worth having," replied the boy, laughing at the thought of a charming little secret which he fancied he knew
Meg omega watch replica colored behind the brake, but asked no questions and looked across the river with the same expectant expression which MrBrooke had worn when he told the story of the knight
"If we are all alive ten years hence, let's meet, and see how many of us have got our wishes, or how much nearer we are then than now," said Jo, always ready with a plan
"Bless me! How old I shall be, twenty-seven!" exclaimed Meg, who felt grown up already, having just reached seventeen
"You and I will be twenty-six, Teddy, Beth twenty-four, and Amy twenty-twoWhat a venerable party!" said Jo
"I hope I shall have done something to be proud of by that time, but I'm such a lazy dog, I'm afraid I shall dawdle, Jo
"You need a motive, Mother says, and when you get it, she is sure you'll work splendidly
"Is she? By Jupiter, I will, if I only get the chance!" cried Laurie, sitting up with sudden energy"I ought to be satisfied to please Grandfather, and I do try, but it's working against the grain, you see, and comes hardHe wants me to be an India merchant, tiffany toggle necklace as he was, and I'd rather be shotI hate tea and sild and spices, and every sort of rubbish his old ships bring, and I don't care how soon they go to the bottom when I own themGoing to college ought to satisfy him, for if I give him four years he ought to let me off from the businessBut he's set, and I've got to do just as he did, unless I break away and please myself, as my father didIf there was anyone left to stay with the old gentleman, I'd do it tomorrow
Laurie spoke excitedly, and looked ready to carry his threat into execution on the slightest provocation, for he was growing up very fast and, in spite of his indolent ways, had a young man's hatred of subjection, a young man's restless longing to try the world for himself
"I advise you to sail away in one of your ships, and never come home again till you have tried your own way," said Jo, whose imagination was fired by the thought of such a daring exploit, and whose sympathy was excited by what she called `Teddy's Wrongs'
"That's not right, JoYou mustn't talk in prada handbags sale that way, and Lauriemustn't take your bad adviceYou should do just what your grandfather wishes, my dear boy," said Meg in her most maternal tone"Do your best at college, and when he sees that you try to please him, I'm sure he won't be hard on you or unjust to youAs you say, there is no one else to stay with and love him, and you'd never forgive yourself if you left him without his permissionDon't be dismal or fret, but do your duty and you'll get your reward, as good MrBrooke has, by being respected and loved
"What do you know about him?" asked Laurie, grateful for the good advice, but objecting to the lecture, and glad to turn the conversation from himself after his unusual outbreak
"Only what your grandpa told us about him, how he took good care of his own mother till she died, and wouldn't go abroad as tutor to some nice person because he wouldn't leave herAnd how he provides now for an old woman who nursed his mother, and never tells anyone, but is just as generous and patient and good as he can be
"So he is, dear men's omega watch old fellow!" said Laurie heartily, as Meg paused, looking flushed and earnest with her story"It's like Grandpa to find out all about him without letting him know, and to tell all his goodness to others, so that they might like himBrooke couldn't understand why your mother was so kind to him, asking him over with me and treating him in her beautiful friendly wayHe thought she was just perfect, and talked about it for days and days, and went on about you all in flaming styleIf ever I do get my wish, you see what I'll do for Booke
"Begin to do something now by not plaguing his life out," said Meg sharply
"How do you know I do, Miss?"
"I can always tell by his face when he goes awayIf you have been good, he looks satisfied and walks brisklyIf you have plagued him, he's sober and walks slowly, as if he wanted to go back and do his work better
"Well, I like that? So you keep an account of my good and bad marks in Brooke's face, do you? I see him bow and smile as he passes your window, but I didn't know you'd got up a louis vuitton travel bags telegra

"Bit of a departure from tradition, isn't it?"
"This isn't your average book," said Ron"It'd pure gold: Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm WitchesExplains everything you need to know about girlsIf only I'd had this last year I'd have known exactly how to get rid of Lavender and I would've known how to get going withWell, Fred and George gave me a copy, and I've learned a lotYou'd be surprised, it's not all about wandwork, either
When they arrived in the kitchen they found a pile of presents waiting on the tableBill and Monsieur Delacour were finishing their breakfasts, while MrsWeasley stood chatting to them over the frying pan
"Arthur told me to wish you a happy seventeenth, Harry," said MrsWeasley, beaming at him"He had to leave early for work, but he'll be back for dinnerThat's our present on top
Harry sat down, took cambon chanel the square parcel she had indicated, and unwrapped itInside was a watch very like the one MrWeasley had given Ron for his seventeenth; it was gold, with stars circling around the race instead of hands
"It's traditional to give a wizard a watch when he comes of age," said MrsWeasley, watching him anxiously from beside the cooker"I'm afraid that one isn't new like Ron's, it was actually my brother Fabian's and he wasn't terribly careful with his possessions, it's a bit dented on the back, but\a150\a150"
The rest of her speech was lost; Harry had got up and hugged herHe tried to put a lot of unsaid things into the hug and perhaps she understood them, because she patted his cheek clumsily when he released her, then waved her wand in a slightly random way, causing half a pack of bacon to flop out of the frying pan onto the omega planet ocean watches floor
"Happy birthday, Harry!" said Hermione, hurrying into the kitchen and adding her own present to the top of the pile"It's not much, but I hope you like itWhat did you get him?" she added to Ron, who seemed not to hear her
"Come on, then, open Hermione's!" said Ron
She had bought him a new SneakoscopeThe other packages contained an enchanted razor from Bill and Fleur ("Ah yes, zis will give you ze smoothest shave you will ever 'ave," Monsieur Delacour assured him, "but you must tell it clearly what you wantzzerwise you might find you 'ave a leetle less hair zan you would like), chocolates from the Delacours, and an enormous box of the latest Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes merchandise from Fred and George
Harry, Ron, and Hermione did not linger at the table, as the arrival of Madame Delacour, Fleur, and Gabrielle made the chanel watch women kitchen uncomfortably crowded
"I'll pack these for you," Hermione said brightly, taking Harry's presents out of his arms as the three of them headed back upstairs"I'm nearly done, I'm just waiting for the rest of your underpants to come out of the wash, Ron\a150\a150"
Ron's splutter was interrupted by the opening of a door on the first-floor landing
"Harry, will you come in here a moment?"
It was GinnyRon came to an abrupt halt, but Hermione took him by the elbow and tugged him on up the stairsFeeling nervous, Harry followed Ginny into her room
He had never been inside it beforeIt was small, but brightThere was a large poster of the Wizarding band the Weird Sisters on one wall, and a picture of Gwenog Jones, Captain of the all-witch Quidditch team the Holyhead Harpies, on the otherA desk stood facing the open window, gucci bag black which looked out over the orchard where he and Ginny had once played a two-a-side Quidditch with Ron and Hermione, and which now housed a large, pearly white marqueeThe golden flag on top was level with Ginny's window
Ginny looked up into Harry's face, took a deep breath, and said, "Happy seventeenth
She was looking at him steadily; he however, found it difficult to look back at her; it was like gazing into a brilliant light
"Nice view," he said feebly, pointing toward with windowHe could not blame her
"I couldn't think what to get you," she said
"You didn't have to get me anything
She disregarded this too
"I didn't know what would be usefulNothing too big, because you wouldn't be able to take it with you
He chanced a glance at herShe was not tearful; that was one of the many wonderful things about Ginny, she was rarely replica tiffany jewelry w

Ron sloped along beside them, and Harry and... 5th September 2010, 00:25
Ron sloped along beside them, and Harry and Griphook followed
A watchful Death Eater was the very last thing they needed, and the worst of it was, with Travers matching at what he believed to be Bellatrix's side, there was no means for Harry to communicate with Hermione or RonAll too soon they arrived at the foot of the marble steps leading up to the great bronze doorsAs Griphook had already warned them, the liveried goblins who usually flanked the entrance had been replaced by two wizards, both of whom were clutching long thin golden rods
"Ah, Probity Probes," signed Travers theatrically, "so crude\a150\a150but so effective!"
And he set off up the steps, nodding left and right to the wizards, who raised the golden rods and passed them up and down his bodyThe Probes, Harry knew, detected spells of concealment and hidden magical objectsKnowing that he had only seconds, Harry pointed Draco's wand at each of the guards in turn and murmured, "Confundo" twiceUnnoticed by Travers, who was looking through the bronze doors at the inner hall, each of the guards gave a little start as the spells hit them
Hermione's white chanel purse long black hair rippled behind her as she climbed the steps
"One moment, madam," said the guard, raising his Probe
"But you've just done that!" said Hermione in Bellatrix's commanding, arrogant voiceTravers looked around, eyebrows raisedThe guard was confusedHe stared down at the thin golden Probe and then at his companion, who said in a slightly dazed voice,
"Yeah, you've just checked them, Marius
Hermione swept forwardRon by her side, Harry and Griphook trotting invisibly behind themHarry glanced back as they crossed the thresholdThe wizards were both scratching their heads
Two goblins stood before the inner doors, which were made of silver and which carried the poem warning of dire retribution to potential thievesHarry looked up at it, and all of a sudden a knife-sharp memory came to him: standing on this very spot on the day that he had turned eleven, the most wonderful birthday of his life, and Hagrid standing beside him saying, "Like I said, yeh'd be mad ter try an' rob it Gringotts had seemed a place of wonder that day, the enchanted repository of a trove of gold he had never known he possessed, and never 925 tiffany's necklace for an instant could he have dreamed that he would return to steal But within seconds they were standing in the vast marble hall of the bank
The long counter was manned by goblins sitting on high stools serving the first customers of the dayHermione, Ron, and Travers headed toward an old goblin who was examining a thick gold coin through an eyeglassHermione allowed Travers to step ahead of her on the pretext of explaining features of the hall to Ron
The goblin tossed the coin he was holding aside, said to nobody in particular, "Leprechaun," and then greeted Travers, who passed over a tiny golden key, which was examined and given back to him
Hermione stepped forward
"Madam Lestrange!" said the goblin, evidently startled"Dear me!" How\a150\a150how may I help you today?"
"I wish to enter my vault," said Hermione
The old goblin seemed to recoil a littleNot only was Travers hanging back, watching, but several other goblins had looked up from their work to stare at Hermioneidentification?" asked the goblin
"Identification? I\a150\a150I have never been asked for identification before!" said Hermione
"They know!" cheap prada handbags whispered Griphook in Harry's ear, "They must have been warned there might be an imposter!"
"Your wand will do, madam," said the goblinHe held out a slightly trembling hand, and in a dreadful blast of realization Harry knew that the goblins of Gringotts were aware that Bellatrix's wand had been stolen
"Act now, act now," whispered Griphook in Harry's ear, "the Imperious Curse!"
Harry raised the hawthorn wand beneath the cloak, pointed it at the old goblin, and whispered, for the first time in his life, "Imperio!"
A curious sensation shot down Harry's arm, a feeling of tingling, warmth that seemed to flow from his mind, down the sinews and veins connecting him to the wand and the curse it had just castThe goblin took Bellatrix's wand, examined it closely, and then said, "Ah, you have had a new wand made, Madam Lestrange!"
"What?" said Hermione, "No, no, that's mine\a150\a150"
"A new wand?" said Travers, approaching the counter again; still the goblins all around were watching"But how could you have done, which wandmaker did you use?"
Harry acted without thinkingPointing his wand at Travers, he muttered, chloe bags paddington "Imperio!" once more
"Oh yes, I see," said Travers, looking down at Bellatrix's wand, "yes, very handsomeand is it working well? I always think wands require a little breaking in, don't you?"
Hermione looked utterly bewildered, but to Harry's enormous relief she accepted the bizarre turn of events without comment
The old goblin behind the counter clapped his hands and a younger goblin approached
"I shall need the Clankers," he told the goblin, who dashed away and returned a moment later with a leather bag that seemed to be full of jangling metal, which he handed to his senior"Good, good! S, if you will follow me, Madam Lestrange," said the old goblin, hopping down off his stool and vanishing from sight"I shall take you to your vault
He appeared around the end of the counter, jogging happily toward them, the contents of the leather bag still jinglingTravers was now standing quite still with his mouth hanging wide openRon was drawing attention to this odd phenomenon by regarding Travers with confusion
"Wait - Bogrod!"
Another goblin came scurrying around the counter
"We have instructions," he said with a bow to tiffany jewelry canada Herm

"My dear boy, I do," said Dumbledore, while his fellow pictures looked confused and curious"A wise and courageous decision, but no less than I would have expected of youDoes anyone know else know where it fell?"
"No one," said Harry, and Dumbledore nodded his satisfaction
"I'm going to keep Ignotus's present, though," said Harry, and Dumbledore beamed
"But of course, Harry, it is yours forever, until you pass it on!"
"And then there's this
Harry held up the Elder Wand, and Ron and Hermione looked at it with a reverence that, even cartier santos 100 in his befuddled and sleep-deprived state, Harry did not like to see

"I know it's powerful," said Harry wearily"But I was happier with mine

He laid the broken wand upon the headmaster's desk, touched it with the very tip of the Elder Wand, and said, "\iReparo\i
As his wand resealed, red sparks flew out of its endHarry knew that he had succeededHe picked up the holly and phoenix wand and felt a sudden warmth in his fingers, as though wand and hand were rejoicing at their reunion

"Are you sure?" said RonThere was the faintest trace of longing in his voice as he looked at the Elder Wand
"I think Harry's right," said Hermione quietly
"That wand's more trouble than it's worth"And quite honestly," he turned away from the painted portraits, thinking now only of the four-poster bed lying waiting for him in Gryffindor Tower, and wondering whether Kreacher might bring him a sandwich there, "I've had enough trouble for a lifetime

"Every day, of you want us to," said Ginny
"Not every day," said Albus quickly, "James says most people only get letters from home about once a month
"We wrote to James three times a week last year," said Ginny

"Who's in charge here?" roared Greyback, covering his moment of inadequacy"I say that's Potter, and him plus his wand, that's two hundred thousand Galleons right there! But if you're too gutless to come along, any of you, it's all for me, and with any luck, I'll get the girl thrown in!"
- \iThe window was the merest slit in the black rock, not big enough for a man to enterA skeletal figure was just visible through it, curled beneath a blanket?\i
"All right!" said Scabior"All right, we're in! And what about the rest of 'em, Greyback, what'll we do with 'em?"
"Might as well take the lotWe've got two Mudbloods, that's another ten GalleonsGive me the sword as wellIf they're rubies, that's another small fortune right there

One of the Snatchers strode to the gates and shook them
"How do we get in? They're locked, Greyback, I can't - blimey!"
He whipped his hands away in frightThe iron was contorting, twisting itself out of the abstract furls and coils into a frightening face, which spoke in a clanging, echoing voice"State your purpose!"
"We've got Potter!" Greyback roared triumphantly"We've captured Harry Potter!"
The gates swung open
"Come on!" said Greyback to his men, and the prisoners were shunted through the gates and up the drive, between high hedges that muffled their footstepsHarry saw a ghostly white shape above him, and realized it was an albino peacockHe stumbled and china mulberry was dragged onto his feet by Greyback; now he was staggering along sideways, tied back-to-back to the four other prisonerClosing his puffy eyes, he allowed the pain in his scar to overcome him for a moment, wanting to know what Voldemort was doing, whether he knew yet that Harry was caught

The dead who walked beside him through the forest were much more real to him now than the living back at the castle: Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and all the others were the ones who felt like ghosts as he stumbled and slipped toward the end of his life, toward Voldemort
